Haight Ashbury Museum in GGP Emergency Aid Station

According to the Hotel and Visitors Bureau the Haight is the second most popular pedestrian tourist destination in SF (Pier 39 is first) and yet, with exception of 3-days-a-week walking tours or my own historical star map, there is precious little that presents its history to this eager public.

Over the years there have been many suggestions for potential Haight Ashbury Museum locations (the Library Park Branch, various stores, 710 Ashbury) but the value of real estate or the commitment to other needs have precluded its establishment. However, there exists a local building (Stanyan betw. Beulah & Frederick) which is already a City Landmark, is unoccupied (and slowly deteriorating), and has no specified place in the GGP Master Plan:

Emergency Aid Station
• accessibility and general
upgrade needed
• new facility for
recreational activities
• landmark structure

It would take some extensive upgrading of the unreinforced masonry to contemporary earthquake standards but perhaps an assessment could be made by the City Engineer's Office.

Park Emergency Aid Station. This structure
served as a San Francisco Department of Public
Health emergency hospital from 1902 until 1978.
It continued as an ambulance station until 1991.
The building will require extensive work for
accessibility and seismic improvements to make it
suitable for a new use. If the improvements can be
made, the structure may provide a new location for
recreational activities. Another possible use would
be as offices for a park conservancy organization.

Azulena is a grey girl kitty, kind of on the skinny side, and has been missing since Sunday evening.

Help stop Urban Outfitters plan for a giant store on Haight Street! Urban Outfitters is attempting to get an exemption from the Planning Commission to build a huge, 8700 foot store at 1728 Haight Street (across from Amoeba). This store will endanger independent neighborhood businesses, by undercutting them in sales and driving up rents, as well as leading the way for more chain stores in the neighborhood.
The opening of an Urban Outfitters would also go against the neighborhood master plan.
In addition, Urban Outfitters, despite it's "alternative" image, is owned by Dick Hayne, a conservative Rebuplican from Pennsylvania who is a financial supporter of Sen. Rick Santorum, whose recent comments about homosexuals equated gay sex with incest and bestiality.
Urban Outfitters also relies on sweatshop labor for its overpriced, "alternative" clothing.
